What is SAC?
The Student Admission Council (SAC) is a student organization that aids the Rice Admission Office in recruitment and yield events. SAC was established by the Rice Admission Office to provide first-hand information to high school students and their families about college in general and Rice in particular. The organization strives to ensure that each incoming freshman class is made up of students with diverse academic, cultural, and extracurricular interests.
We – the members of SAC – seek to pursue this goal by interacting directly with prospective students. The Rice student body can offer a uniquely accurate and appropriate perspective on life at Rice to high school students from many backgrounds.
We achieve this ultimate goal through 5 focused committees:
- Campus Tours
- Lunch hosting
- Event volunteer recruitment
- Hometown Ambassador Committee
- Online Recruitment
- Overnight Hosting
In general, the Directors of SAC work with the Executive Board and the Coordinators of SAC to devise and carry out ways of achieving the stated recruitment goals for the year. The Directors are key in making the Executive Board and the entire organization a cohesive and working unit. The Executive Board is made up of the committee chairs.
Campus Tours Committee
As its name implies, this committee is responsible for designing and coordinating the campus tour of Rice. Committee members have a hand in designing the tour and its content, selecting and training tour guides, and working with special groups who are interested in seeing and learning about the Rice campus. Tours are given twice a day and once on Saturday morning for most of the academic calendar.
Lunch Hosting Committee
The committee members take prospective students to lunch at residential colleges. While providing a great experience in the college system, members also offer a student’s point of view on social and academic life at Rice. The current Rice students who volunteer in this committee are trained to be informative and helpful.
Event Volunteer Recruitment Committee
This committee works to design and implement programs for prospective students to learn about Rice. The fall usually includes several on campus programs for local and nationwide high school seniors and in the spring the committee is in charge of planning and running Vision Weekend and Owl Days.
Hometown Ambassador Committee
This committee helps prospective students from all over the country learn more about the student experience at Rice. Committee members visit their high school while they are home over Thanksgiving or winter break. This allows members to share their perspective while also recruiting students from their hometown.
Online Recruitment Committee
This committee aims at improving SAC’s publicity and visibility online and most importantly at communicating with prospective students through internet technologies. The committee members maintain the SAC website and online chatting system so that high school students can learn about Rice even if they are miles away.
Overnight Hosting Committee
This committee has the important job of matching high school students with Rice students for an overnight stay in one of the residential colleges. The work that this committee does is a year-round project that is greatly appreciated by the perspective Rice applicants and admitted students who visit Rice.
