Rice: Unconventional Wisdom

Freshman International Citizens

Rice's undergraduate population is diverse, with students from 42 countries who are supported by a city composed of more than 100 different nationalities speaking over 145 languages. International students find Rice and Houston to be welcoming communities that provide a home away from home.

Application requirements for International citizens

All documents must be submitted in English. If original documents are issued in another language, the applicant must submit an official translation completed by a certified translator in addition to submitting the original official documents. Certified translation services commonly used by Rice applicants include SpanTran and World Education Services (WES).

A complete freshman application to Rice consists of the following:

  • Official Test Scores: either the SAT or ACT. Rice also recommends you submit two SAT Subject Tests related to your proposed area of study.
  • School Report (counselor recommendation)
  • One Teacher Evaluation (teacher recommendation)
  • Midyear Report (to be submitted when senior midyear grades become available)
Additional requirements for EARLY DECISION APPLICANTS:
  • Early Decision Agreement
  • Official high school transcript including grades from your first marking period
Additional requirements for INTERNATIONAL CITIZENS:
Application Checklist
Candidates who live outside the U.S. and those living in the U.S. with a valid visa are required to submit a financial statement. International applicants who are not requesting financial aid must show official documentation (appropriate affidavits and/or scholarship awards) of resources sufficient to cover the costs of the first year of study before their files can be reviewed for admission.

For international students, a candidate's ability to fund the cost of attendance is a factor considered in the admission process. Very limited funds are available to applicants requesting financial aid. However, Rice meets full demonstrated need of admitted international students.
Applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English are required to take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

If you have received two years of instruction in English, you are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS. The minimum acceptable score on the TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) is 100, or a sum total of 75 on the TOEFL PDT (paper-delivered test). The minimum acceptable score on the IELTS is 7. Rice's TOEFL code is 6609.
Additional requirement for MUSIC APPLICANTS:
  • An Audition Profile Form or Preliminary recording, if necessary, as described on the Audition Page.
